Re: Favorite kinds of metal
1. gothic (for being my first love, for its depth, sensibility and harmony)
2. melodic death (for energizing me, making my heart go faster and for the burst of anger)
3. power (because of the positive vibe it gives me, the good feelings, the beautiful melodies)
4. black (for its grandeur, aggressiveness, bitterness..)

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
I like bits of all genres really and of course those Finnish bands that tend to cross a few genres

Indeed so! So many of the Finnish bands walk their own path and can't be put in a single genre. Sometimes even 2 genres are not enough! I've seen long ago that many websites call it "Suomi metal", especially to name the gothic-like bands, and fans adopted this name. Then, if we have it like that, I can call it my top metal genre

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
I think that's basically because everyone has it's own definition of what f.e. meldodeath exactely is. some who listen to finish metal a lot may put it to suomi metal. But there are other who listen a lot to f.e. in flames and stuff and then call it goteborg (as Ravisk) metal or whatever. i think the more you listen to a genre, the more you question the name of it.

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Yes, I think it's that too... and the more familiar you are with a certain band(s) sound. It becomes questionable, as more and more differences appear to you.

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
I generally won't even venture out and say that I like certain genres or subgroups of metal, because it always starts a fight. If I like it, then I'll listen to it. That's usually the only justification I give to people who want to argue.
That being said, the majority of metal I listen to could be classified as folk metal, black metal, gothic metal or melodic death metal.

Well mind you Gotehenburg Metal cause of the area that the metal originated which is in Gothenburg, so yeah the 3 Kings of AT THE GATES/Dark Tranquility/In Flames. But between the 3 ATG definitely Tops, IF and DT got nothing on them although they disbanded after their epic master piece album SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL, oh well if you're a fan of At the Gates fret not the members formed another band which is The Haunted, the Bjorler twins with Adrian Erlandsson regrouped and recruited Patrik Jensen from Seance and Peter Dolving. Although I prefer Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg's vocals.

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Anything that's melodic, symphonic, epic, neo-classical or progressive. Don't care what subgenre, whether traditional, power, black, death, doom, gothic or avantgarde. Only thing I've never liked is alternative and anything with -core. Makes me nervous and can't stand the vocals. Seems I'm naturally trve and immune against false metal

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Mostly Gothic, Symphonic, Power...some Folk too...anything with classical elements in it...and I'm not a big fan of grunts, I prefer clean vocals

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Grunts are OK to me, as long as there are clean vocals, too. I, too, seem to love anything with classical elements, though I also like metal with jazz influences. Folk metal is great, too. I simply love variety in my metal.

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Well I practically only listen to dark music, so my favorite Metal subgenres are obviously the dark ones:
Gothic (Lacrimosa, Theatre Of Tragedy, Tristania)
Doom (My Dying Bride)
Folk (Eluveitie, Korpiklaani)
Symphonic (Therion)
Medieval (Haggard)
Industrial (Rammstein, Fear Factory)
But there are some other ambiguous genres that I also like very much:
Dark (Sentenced, Paradise Lost, Katatonia)
Alternative (The Gathering)
Classical (Tarja)
Gothic (Lacrimosa, Theatre Of Tragedy, Tristania)
Doom (My Dying Bride)
Folk (Eluveitie, Korpiklaani)
Symphonic (Therion)
Medieval (Haggard)
Industrial (Rammstein, Fear Factory)

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
Progressive (Opeth, anyone?), Gothic, Symphonic, Power, Doom, Trash...put some Black and Death here and there....and the bands that started it all like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Jane's Addiction, whatever genre you want to put them in.
But I listen to a lot of non-metal stuff as well.

Re: Favorite kinds of metal
i would have to say classic heavy metal (iron maiden, manowar, judas priest, black sabbath, motorhead, metallica, megadeth, ac/dc, saxon, accept, scorpions, and so on...) and viking/pagan/folk metal like bathory, ensiferum, amon amarth, korpiklaani, moonsorrow, eluveitie, turisas, týr, arkona, finntroll, stuff like that.
also like some black and death metal, some thrash and some power metal, altough are not my favorite styles.
